Why turning's MRR formula looks different from milling's
Material removal rate for turning = 12 × SFM × feed (in/rev) × depth of cut, which comes from the same physical idea as milling's DOC × WOC × feed, just rearranged: cutting speed and diameter already encode how fast material passes the tool, so multiplying by feed and depth of cut directly gives the volume removed per minute without needing RPM as a separate term.
Same unit power, same efficiency logic as milling
Once MRR is known, the rest of the calculation is identical to the (milling) Horsepower Calculator: multiply by the material's unit power constant to get cutting horsepower at the tool, then divide by machine efficiency to get the horsepower the spindle motor actually needs to be rated for.
Roughing passes are where this actually matters
A light finishing pass essentially never approaches a lathe's spindle power limit — this calculator earns its keep on heavy roughing passes, where a machinist pushing depth of cut and feed to maximize material removal can genuinely stall an underpowered spindle or overheat the motor if the numbers aren't checked first.
