MRR is just a volume, not a difficulty rating
Material removal rate is the depth of cut times the width of cut times the feed rate — three linear numbers multiplying out into a volume per minute (in³/min). It's a useful way to compare two roughing strategies (say, a shallower, wider pass against a deeper, narrower one) on equal footing, since two very different-looking passes can move the same amount of metal per minute.
MRR doesn't tell you if the cut is actually safe to run
This number says nothing about spindle horsepower, tool deflection, or chip evacuation — a calculated MRR that's well within a machine's power curve on paper can still chatter or break a tool if the setup isn't rigid enough, or if chips aren't clearing the flutes. Use MRR to compare options and estimate cycle time, not as a standalone go/no-go check on whether a cut is actually appropriate for your machine and tooling.
Estimating cycle time from a target volume
If you know roughly how much material needs to come off a part (say, from a stock model comparison in CAM), dividing that volume by the MRR gives a rough time estimate for the roughing operation — useful for quoting a job or comparing strategies, though it ignores air-cutting moves, tool changes, and finishing passes layered on top.
