6061 favors higher flute counts and higher speeds than most people expect from a general-purpose calculator — it's one of the easiest materials to overthink.

Why 6061 tolerates aggressive numbers

6061-T6 is soft, ductile, and machines with low cutting force compared to almost anything else in the shop — the limiting factor is almost never the material fighting the tool. It's usually heat buildup from re-cutting chips, or a finish problem from too light a chip load letting the tool rub instead of shear cleanly.

The real failure mode: chip welding, not tool wear

Aluminum's biggest practical risk is a chip re-welding to the flute or workpiece from heat, not the tool dulling — this shows up as a smeared, gummy finish rather than a worn edge. Flood coolant or air blast to clear chips, and a chip load high enough to keep the edge shearing rather than rubbing, both do more for finish quality here than backing off speed.

Coating rarely matters as much as it does in steel

Uncoated or ZrN-coated carbide is standard for aluminum — coatings meant for steel (TiN, TiAlN) don't help here and can actually increase built-up edge tendency in some cases. A sharp, polished flute (sometimes marketed as an "aluminum-specific" geometry) matters more than the coating itself.
