1018 is often supplied cold-rolled, which is slightly harder and more abrasive at the surface than the core — the first light pass can run a touch slower than the numbers above suggest.
Why 1018 is the default reference material
Low carbon content and no significant alloying means 1018 behaves consistently and predictably, without the hardness swings, work hardening, or heat-sensitivity that show up in higher-alloy or stainless steels — it's a reasonable stand-in whenever a specific low-carbon steel isn't called out by exact grade, and a common baseline other steels get compared against.
Cold-rolled vs. hot-rolled changes the first pass
Cold-rolled 1018 has a harder, more work-hardened skin from the rolling process itself, while hot-rolled has a scaled, often gritty surface that's abrasive to a tool's first pass — either way, the very first cut into raw stock is often the toughest part of the job, and running that pass a bit more conservatively than the numbers above is common practice even though the bulk material machines easily once you're under the surface.
Don't assume "steel numbers" transfer to alloy or stainless steel
It's tempting to use 1018 as the default number for "steel" in general, but alloy steels (4140) and stainless (304/316) machine meaningfully differently — slower speeds, different chip load tolerance, and different failure modes (work hardening in stainless, hardness variation in alloy steel). Use the material-specific calculator for those rather than defaulting to 1018's numbers.
